Frugal Fun Projects - Wine
Charms

Do you enjoy wine with friends? Do you lose track of which glass belongs to which person? Here's an easy frugal
fun project showing how to make quick, easy and inexpensive wine charms using simple steps and
materials.

Let's take a look at the materials and tools for this project.
Frugal Fun Projects: Wine Charms Materials and Tools:
- Yarn - gold lamé or other type of yarn
- Beads - several varieties
- Scissors
- Round object at least 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter (We used a container of seed beads. The cap
would prevent removing the braid, but the smooth bottom allows the braid to slide off.)
The Steps for How to Make the Frugal Fun Projects: Wine Charms:
Note: The holes in the chosen beads must be large enough for at least one strand of the selected yarn to pass
through each of the holes.
Cut strands of yarn 12 inches long in multiples of three. For medium to heavy yarn, three strands should be
enough.

Wrap the yarns around a round object at least 3/4 inch in diameter. Tie a knot in the yarn.
This will build the loop to attach to the stem of the wine glass. Make sure you can slide the
braid off the round object when finished.

Divide the yarn into three equal sections.

Begin braiding by taking the right section over the middle section. Pull the middle to the right.

Next, move the left section over the new middle and move the middle the left.

Pull the yarn firmly after each overlap to keep the braid consistent. Continue the alternate
lapping until you have 1/2 to 3/4 inch of braid.

Add the bead to the right section by pushing the yarn through the hole in the bead.

Push the bead up the yarn section and continue braiding.

Make your braid longer than you want such that the end knot will be in the braided section.

Slide the braid off the round object. Trim the ends of the yarn 3/8 to 1/2 inch past the
knot.

Here is the finished wine charm with five other similar yet different charms.

This picture shows the shiny, clear bead wine charm.

This was an odd bead - round, clear and has an "F" on two surfaces. Letter beads could be interesting for
different people or wines or places.

This wine charm uses an off-white, elongated bead.

For another variation, this wine charm includes two small, round white beads.

As another example, this wine charm shows three small, elongated white beads in the braid.

Here they are again - all six golden wine charms.

Other variations could include different colors and types of yarn, different colors of beads and a variety of
beads or metal charms in the braid.
Have fun making your own wine charms.
